Last spring I posted a blog about National Day of Everything and thought it was time to revisit Nationaltoday.com to see what’s up. Jackpot! I was excited to learn Monday was National Pie Day! I love pie–fruit, savory, cream–you name it.
Did you know pies show up in written recipes dating back to ancient Rome? One of the first known pie recipes was a rye-crusted goat cheese and honey pie. The Romans also made pies with a variety of meats, seafood and fruit and still found time to build roads and viaducts across their huge empire. Pies first appeared in England in the 12th century, still mostly filled with meat. When the Puritans and other English settlers fled for the New World, they took pie with them.
When asked, Americans chose apple as their favorite pie with pumpkin second and chocolate as third. I make a pretty tasty cherry pie, and I’ll share the recipe at the end of the blog.
While I was perusing the Nationaltoday website I also discovered this Thursday is “Dress in clashing items from head to toe Day.” Who wouldn’t have fun with that? Maybe you dress in clashing clothes everyday. Neutrals like black and white or navy and brown are a no-no on this day. Say good-bye to the fashion police and show up in mixed colors, prints and textures and you’ll be clashing in no time.

In my opinion the fashion police would probably ticket the guy for wearing a sweater from the 70’s and the girl for being a lost flower child except her outfit isn’t dragging on the ground. If you don’t know or have forgotten what a flower child is, google it.
Today’s last entry is Call a Friend Day which officially falls on December 28 but is so worth while it should happen every day. Sometimes all these electronic gadgets we have end up keeping us from fostering our friendships because they take up our time. Talk with a friend, voice to voice and make a special connection. I took my own advice and called Judi and Cindy this week. Do you have the number(s) of the friend who’s waiting to hear from you? Put on your most outlandish outfit, cut a piece of pie, and punch in that number to call your friend. You’ll both be happy you did.

Here’s the Cherry Pie recipe from Southmoreland on the Plaza, Kansas City. Hints of cinnamon and almond make it special.
Preheat over at 400 degrees. Use a deep dish pie pan or place on a cookie sheet as it may bubble over.

Happy eating and as always happy reading. Next month I will have an update on my current project, Lila’s Song . . . that should get me focused!
Love this! Love pie, and am anxious to try the cherry pie recipe. I have a problem with things that don’t match, so the clashing hurts my eye! LOL I would rather talk on the phone with a friend, and you are on my list. For those who don’t answer their phone or don’t return my calls, shame on you.
Thanks always for the Fun Stuff Jane!
You’re welcome. Thanks for reading! 🙂
I tried calling you, but number is old and doesn’t work🙁 . Maybe you can email me your new one. Also, I didn’t get the whole pie recipe. Hope all is well; fine here.
I’ll see what I can do about sending the recipe!

Yum! Always love your blogs, Jane, this one made me hungry!
Thanks for reading! 🙂
Hi, Jane❣️ Loved the text, thank you, but I couldn’t seem to download your recipe. I have always added almond, but now I’ll try adding a bit of cinnamon. Those clues I got from your text. I’m still curious to see the rest of your recipe. Thank you for including me in your updates ❣️Micki 🤓
Micki, I’ll try to copy and paste the recipe and see if that works. I’ll let you know.
Thanks for reading 🙂
