Lila’s Journey Has Begun

May 22, 2024 By Jane Perry 4 Comments

I’m deliriously excited to announce the release of Lila’s Journey, available now in eBook and print editions. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D4ND9NWN/ref=

Two years ago I toured Council Grove, KS, the setting of the book, and posted a blog in October 2022 which you can read by selecting the blog tab on my website. Below are some of the photo highlights which you will read about in Lila’s Journey.

This is where Lila’s story begins, at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm (referred to as Beatty’s Stop in the book) on the Santa Fe Trail in Olathe, KS. It’s the only operating stagecoach stop remaining on the trail and is located two miles from where I live.

When Lila first arrives in Council Grove she is desperate to find work, and Hays House Restaurant offers the best opportunity for her. Built in 1857, it claims to be the oldest continuously operating restaurant west of the Mississippi.

Last Chance Trading Post is the busy mercantile on the Santa Fe Trail and the “last chance” to buy supplies before departing for Santa Fe.

Hermit’s Cave (on the right) is home to a unique and mysterious character that Lila befriends and is based on an actual person.

Council Grove was the perfect place for a settlement as well as where wagon trains formed up to head west, thanks to the nearby forest and water from the Neosho River. This marker overlooks the place in the river where the wagon trains made the crossing.

Bear with me. I couldn’t resist posting the cover one more time–I really like it! If you read “Lila’s Song”, you will find the first chapters of the book familiar as they are drawn from the short story.

Take a moment this weekend to remember those who gave their lives so that you and I may enjoy life abundantly. It’s often taken for granted. We will hang the flag, grill chicken, and look forward to the beginning of summer. Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.

Until next time . . .
