Welcome to Trunk or Treat at Cornerstone Church!

Our church parking lot transforms into a paradise for trick or treaters and their families at Halloween. We decorate the trunks of our cars and hand out candy to costumed children from Overland Park, North Kansas City, Grandview and surrounding communities.

There’s not enough space here to show all 25 trunks, but this is a sampling of the creativity that was on display. This was my first year at Trunk or Treat and I’m impressed!

If you craved more than candy for supper, hot dogs and apple cider were on the menu. As the temperature dropped during the evening, the hot cider was a big hit. Above are a few of the more than 80 volunteers led by Ashleigh MacGillivray who contributed to the Trunk or Treat success. “Many hands make light work” is an old saying that applies here.

None other than KC Wolf, mascot of the Kansas City Chiefs, joined us for the evening, and I got a big old hug from him. He draws a crowd wherever he goes and smiles from everyone!

Our DJ for the night was our own Josh Fernandez who provided the best music and banter as only he can. Imagine this: you’re a kid wearing your favorite Halloween costume of all time, your bag is full of candy, there’s a full moon overhead and a mix of spooky fog and double bubbles are swirling through the air around you while you’re hopping to the tune of “Thriller.” Is that not a great Halloween memory?

The day that started cold and rainy ended crisp and clear with a full moon shining on the last of the goblins heading home with memories of a happy Halloween. We love sharing this time with our Kansas City neighbors. I hope you have time in the days and weeks ahead to make memories with your friends and family whether they are for Halloween or “just because.”
Until next time . . .
P.S. It’s not too soon to start ordering books for someone on your Christmas list who enjoys historical fiction, and I have a great suggestion in Marcello’s Promise.
What a magical Halloween celebration! I love the photos and I’m sure the kids and families enjoyed every minute!!
Thanks for sharing ❣️It sounds wonderful, Jane, but I couldn’t find the pictures! What did I do wrong?
Those Perry’s know how to party!!!
BACK A FEW DECADES, (1990-2005), WE WELCOMED “TRICK OR TREATERS” … AS MANY AS 25 GROUPS. AND BEFORE I WOULD HAND OUT TREATS, I WOULD ASK THE SCHOOL-AGE KIDS TO EITHER SING THE FIRST VERSE OF THE NATIONAL ANTHEM OR SAY THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGENCE. IF THEY WERE RELUCTANT, I WOUL SING ALONG OR HELP RECITE THE PLEDGE. WE MADE IT A FUN THING AND FOR 6 OR 7 YEARS, SEVERAL GROUPS WOULD COME BY JUST SO THEY COULD SING [LOUDLY]. IF THEY COULD NOT DO EITHER … I SCOLDED THEM GENTLY AND SENT THEM AWAY EMPTY. IF THEY DID A GOOD JOB. I GAVE THEM ALOT EXTRA. ONE SUCH YOUNG LAD IS NOW IN HIS 30’S, MARRIED WITH 5 KIDS, AND LIVES A GOOD DISTANCE AWAY, BUT HIS MOM STILL LIVES CLOSE AND OFTEN COMMENTS ABOUT HER SON AND HOW HE AND HIS BUDDIES LOOKED FORWARD TO COMING TO OUR HOME.
I love thinking about you singing the national anthem with trick or treaters, especially on Veteran’s weekend. Happy Vet’s Day Stu! Thank you!
