Webster defines nook as “a sheltered or remote spot, secluded or obscure; a retreat.” For purposes today, I’m referring to nook as a “retreat” or finding your nook for reading.
You know what I mean–that favorite place to settle in, undisturbed, where you spend hours as your book takes you away to anywhere and everywhere. The shady deck on a summer afternoon or curled up under a blanket on a snowy day are two of my favorites. While you’ve always had special places to read, have you thought about expanding where you search for books?

For my friends in Overland Park, Kansas, I got a newsletter from Christin Young at The Green Door Book Store and Gift Shoppe last week. They are in the final stages of having an operational coffee bar in their book store. Partnering with Maps Coffee in Lenexa, Christen and her staff are creating a drink menu and rearranging the store to accommodate the addition of a coffee bar. Located at the the southeast corner of Highway 69 and 151st St, The Green Door is worth visiting whether looking for a gift or an away-from-home-reading nook. thgreendoorstore.com As time goes by I realize how important it is to support independent book stores. Take time to find one near you.

Sometimes it takes more than an online description to get the full flavor of a book. Really. Why not go to your local library to peruse books in depth before you purchase one as a special gift or check one out and head to your nook for serious reading? Libraries have designated shelves or table displays for new releases and comfy chairs waiting for patrons. You may stumble across an unknown gem to take home to your porch swing. Plus libraries add new programs and activities worth discovering. As we adapt to coming out of the pandemic, I’d advise checking out the website of libraries, book stores and coffee houses for hours and local advisories before visiting.

What are you reading this summer? I am finally reading The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson and look forward to our next book club selection, A Walk Along the Beach by Debbie Macomber.
Where is your nook? A book store, a coffee shop, your backyard hammock? I’d love to see where you while away the hours so send me your pictures at perryjane181@gmail.com. In the meantime I’ll be on the deck (if it’s not too hot) reading!
