Crawdads and Drinks

July 29, 2022 By Jane Perry 6 Comments

Do I have a treat for you—a quick trip to the movies and a tall cold summer drink.

I read Where the Crawdads Sing over a year ago and saw the movie this week. The coming-of-age/murder mystery book has been enormously popular. In my opinion a vulnerable yet triumphant protagonist makes a compelling story, and what is more vulnerable than an abandoned child? I loved the book and was anxious to see how it would translate to the big screen.

When I read a scathing movie review, it often means I’ll like the movie, and that was the case with Crawdads. I thought Daisy Edgar-Jones was great cast as Kya; the Louisiana coastal setting was magical. The isolation, loneliness, and wildness of Kya’s childhood so beautifully captured in the book was hard to duplicate in the movie, although it came close. The screen play used considerable flashback which could be confusing to viewers unfamiliar with the story. Overall, the movie remains close to the book and the triumph of Kya shines through.

Now for the Bourbon Slush recipe.

This requires a 3 qt or 96 fl oz container and space in your freezer. I used an empty frozen margarita mix bucket or two freezer friendly containers will work.

Mix in a large kettle or bowl:

9 cups hot water

2 T instant tea

1 cup sugar

1-12oz can froz orange juice thawed

1-12oz can froz lemonade thawed

3 cups bourbon

Mix all ingredients and freeze at least 2 days. To serve, scoop about 1 cup frozen mixture into a tall glass and fill with 7-Up. Stir and start sipping!

I will close with photos of Sweetwater Lake in the good old summertime. Before you enjoy the pictures may I gently remind you, you can purchase Marcello’s Promise in softcover, ebook or hardcover at Amazon.com. Your support is deeply appreciated.
Now where’s that adult slushy?

Jane, you expressed my feelings about the movie exactly as I felt about it. It was so good I’m going to see it again with my daughter when she visits next week. Phooey on those critics. I’d like to see them produce something as good as that! I loved the photography too and thought it was especially beautiful as are your very own photos of your lake.
Thanks for the recipe it sounds like the perfect summer drink. Just wish I had a dock to sit on and dangle my feet in the water while sipping it.
Enjoy the rest of your summer.

I felt like I could see it again too, Carole. Even though there’s some violence I even thought my college age granddaughters might appreciate the story of Kya overcoming such odds. I loved seeing Kya’s beautiful drawings of nature, too. Enjoy the movie again next week. You’ll see so many more interesting and lovely details the second time. 😊
PS I got the recipe from my neighbor Caroline across the street. It lasts several months during the summer depending on how thirsty you (and your company) are!

What I remember is you starting to drink before the 7-Up was added. 😀 It’s all good!
      Hugs to you and John!
